What is BlackBrainSciShowcase?

For the second year in a row, Women of the Wohl are hosting another BlackBrainSciShowcase: our successful online seminar series celebrating and showcasing the work of Black researchers in neuroscience and neuro-related fields to the King’s College London neuroscience community. This event series is kindly sponsored by Proteintech.

We would like to invite Black researchers working in neuroscience, or neuro-related fields, to submit abstracts for this paid speaker opportunity. We are looking for 8 speakers to fill our programme of 4 weekly seminars throughout summer 2021. This event series is in collaboration with our sponsors, Proteintech.

Each week, across 4 weekly sessions, we will host a 1 hour online seminar featuring 2 excellent science talks from Black researchers both within and external to King’s College London. You will have the opportunity to showcase your work to our neuroscience community at King’s: from undergraduates all the way to senior researchers.

Each hour of science talks will be followed by a 1 hour informal Q&A discussion. This will provide our audience of early career researchers and students with an opportunity to ask you questions relating to your research, career journey and lived experience as a Black researcher.

What does being a speaker involve?

Each weekly seminar session will have 2 speakers and will be held online on Microsoft Teams. Selected speakers will deliver a 20 minute online research seminar, followed by 10 minutes question time on their work. Both session speakers will then take part in a 1 hour informal discussion session answering questions and reflecting on their career journey and lived experience with students and early career level researchers. The science talks and Q&A sessions will be chaired by the Women of the Wohl team.

Speakers would be required to produce slides for their 20 minutes talk. We encourage speakers to take the opportunity to be creative in making their talk engaging to an audience of mixed scientific career levels, from across the broad neuroscience field, and which includes undergraduates. Why is your research important, how does it help people and what makes you excited about it? While speakers should present their main body of work as they would to a usual scientific audience, they must ensure they include an introduction and final overview that is accessible to non-specialist undergraduate/bachelors students.

Financial compensation

Women of the Wohl firmly believes that Black researchers should be financially compensated for time spent on activities relating to equality, diversity & inclusion and student outreach, rather than undertaking these activities for free at the expense of their research time.

In line with this, we have secured sponsorship to compensate each speaker £80 in total for their time. This covers the 2 hours total time attending the event, as well as an anticipated 2 hours preparation time, at a rate of £20 per hour.

Please note: in order to receive payment for your time, you will be required to complete an invoice with your financial details, so that King’s College London Student Union may process and transfer payment to you.

Who can apply?

We welcome submission of abstracts from all researchers identifying as Black, of all gender identities and expressions, from neuroscience and neuro-related fields (e.g. psychiatry, psychology, mental health). Abstracts are welcome from all career levels: from undergrad all the way up to senior faculty.

We aim to ensure that our selected speakers reflect a balanced gender representation, and as wide a range of research topics as possible within neuroscience.
